Description

Written by an internationally recognized authority, "The Enjoyment of Chess Problems" is a classic treatise on this minor art. It is designed to give the everyday chess player, as well as the problem fan, in a popular rather than formal manner, a basic knowledge of terms and themes that should double his pleasure in solving chess problems.

Alain White, the world's great chess problem authority, who pronounced this work "the most important one-volume contribution [on problems] originating solely in the U.S.A.," wrote the author that "it is a grand piece of work, thorough, complete and presented with real charm."

Opening with an explanation of the distinction between a chess problem and a com-posed endgame, an introductory chapter gives a broad picture of the essential charac teristics of the modern chess problem. This is followed by seven chapters devoted to the popular two-movers. Next is a chapter, of considerable historical interest, describing the distinctive characteristics of the various schools of problem composition. Then come seven more chapters dealing with three-move and four-move problems, with a final chapter on selfmates.

Each definition or description of a term or theme is exemplified in an accompanying illustrative problem for you to solve. There are 200 diagrammed positions, all of the author's composition, over fifty of which won prizes or honors in problem tourneys. Third, revised, 1961 edition. Indexed for convenient reference.
