Liberty or Death!

Based on the concept by G.K. Chesterton and his friend H.G. Wells, Uncle Chestnut’s Table Gype challenges player to move their pieces across the board. A simple enough goal, but unlike other games, the pieces change randomly as they are jumped.

The late 18th century saw revolution in Europe with Louis being deposed by the mob, preceded by a rebellion in the British colonies. This revolution came to be called pitted the British Crown forces against initially local militias and later, under General George Washington a more formal American army. Like all civil wars, loyalties were split, families divided, and as the war progressed the outnumbered British brought in German mercenaries to add to their numbers and to use their fighting skills. The American forces sent to France for troops and supplies who were only too pleased to help, having lost Canada to the British a few years before. Both sides also deployed large units of irregulars and militias, armed with muskets but few bayonets and some equipped with long accurate rifles. Cavalry was little used in the heavily wooded terrain, but light guns were common enough in the major actions of the period. Both sides would employ Native Americans, though it was the British who courted them most successfully and used them in fearsome raids. Liberty or Death! was a rallying cry for a new country that had emerged eager to stand on its own two feet - a country that King George of Great Britain was not prepared to give away lightly.
