Description

The Aegean Sea, 1941: for the first time in naval history a powerful fleet with sea room to manoeuver and evident superiority over opposing sea forces came under persistent and severely damaging attack from enemy air forces. There was little or no fighter protection, and no escape from the ferocity of the Luftwaffe onslaught. The Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet lost three cruisers and eight destroyers; two battleships, an aircraft carrier, five more cruisers and seven other destroyers were damaged. 2,000 officers and men of the Royal Navy were killed.

It was a three-month epic of endurance. under the indomitable Admiral Cunningham the fleet had transported 58,000 men to Greece to counter the German invasion, only to have to evacuate 50,000 of them to Crete a month later. Then, under constant fire, 17,000 were evacuated from Crete to Egypt. Victory in the battle at sea belonged to the Germans, and the importance of air power at sea had been established The Royal Navy withdrew from Crete, bombed to defeat.
