Description

This is an operational level game, for two players, of the initial battle that took place in North Africa as Panzer Armee Afrika endeavored to out flank the British 8th Army's position at the railway halt of El Alamein in August-September 1942. After retreating from Mersa Matruh, the Eighth Army established a defensive line from El Alamein on the coast to the Qattara Depression in the south. At this point, the gap between the sea and the near-impassable Depression was at its narrowest, making this an ideal defensive point. For the Germans, their supply situation was precarious, and they were forced to pause and rebuild their strength before attacking again. When they did, they found the Allies had not wasted their time either, being strongly dug in, reinforced, and with a strong Air Force in support. Sometimes known as the First Battle of El Alamein, the fighting actually centered around the ridge in the middle of the Allies' defensive line, and the other name for the battle refers to this geographic feature - Alam Halfa.

Units are regiments/brigades with some battalions. Map scale is 3.9 Kms/hex and each of the thirteen turns represents about half a day.

Alam Halfa Contains:

  • full color 12.6" by 17.7" map
  • 312 mounted (uncut) double-sided color counters
  • rule book
  • roster sheets
  • charts
