Description

Cadderly, a twenty-year-old priest in the service of an obscure order of an obscure god, is more an adopted son of the scholarly monks of the Edificant Library than he is a priest. He questions his own faith, seeks his own path, and keeps his own council -- and he's set his heart on a young monk named Danica, who’s also come to the library as a student.

Aballister, a priest who serves the dreaded Lady of Poison, also follows his own path, but his leads to chaos and destruction. And he has his eye on the Edificant Library. With the help of a wicked imp, he introduces the dreaded chaos curse into the pastoral library, setting about a chain of events that could destroy it forever.

The gods of the Forgotten Realms world can be fickle and cruel, and use their mortal servants to inflict terrible harm, but they can also be forces for good, for knowledge and peace. When the peaceful gods of knowledge and invention, Oghma and his companion deity Denier, are attacked by forces of Talona, the Lady of Poison, it will be their mortal servants -- including Cadderly -- who will pay the price, and do their best to win the day.

Canticle is the first novel in the epic five-book series The Cleric Quintet. Author R.A. Salvatore is best known as the creator of The Legend of Drizzt, and though this series begins and ends separate from that storyline, Cadderly and other characters and situations from The Cleric Quintet are featured in Drizzt novels including The Silent Blade, and culminating in 2009's smash hit The Ghost King. The Cleric Quintet continues with Book II: In Sylvan Shadows.
