Description

To mark the 60th anniversary of the battle of France in May 1940, this issue features two articles about the blitzkrieg campaign. Major Tom Mouat tells the full story of the capture of the immensely strong and sophisticated fortress of Eben Emael. While Martin Marix Evans investigates the different reasons given for the delay in the Panzers' final assault on Dunkirk and comes up with a new and persuasive account of the leadership and intelligence factors that were critical to the German high command's decision-making. Europe's south-western coastline was the main scene for the longer conflict between Viking and Moor; Dr David Nicolle tells how superior sea and land power set the limits to Viking expansion on the Iberian peninsular and in the western Mediterranean. Stephen Turnbull picks up on the theme of weaponry and fortification in an account, based on his own research, of the evolution of Japanese defensive engineering and architecture through the 16th century, in line with the increasing effectiveness of firepower. A century later and in the Americas, leadership and discipline in the ranks were key factors in the success of the buccaneer Henry Morgan's march across the isthmus and raid on the city of Panama; Angus Konstam, former curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Center follows the buccaneers on campaign. Finally, René Chartrand continues Osprey's celebration of the battle of Marengo, the second anniversary in the Issue, with a historical investigation of the famous dish named after the battle and offers a delicious recipe for re-enactment.
